Healthier Water Runs through the Pipeline in Sjenica
27 December 2013, SjenicaAsbestos pipes in part of the transitional pipeline for water supply in the centre of Sjenica were successfully replaced within the project financially supported by the European Union and the Government of Switzerland through the European Partnership with Municipalities Programme EU PROGRES. Thus, the quality of water supply was improved for around 2,500 households and over 100 companies in Sjenica.
Due to the dilapidated pipes made of asbestos and cement dating back to the sixties, the households in the centre of the municipality did not have stable water supply and the water leakage was substantial. The whole water supply system in this municipality was made of asbestos which turned out to be carcinogenic material. That is why it became essential to replace the pipes. Through construction of a new 1,280 meters long pipeline in the most critical part, this project will save around 15% of water. The reconstruction enables the suburbs and the surrounding villages to connect to the water supply system since so far, they were not cover by it.
The total value of replacement of asbestos-cement pipeline in Sjenica was EUR 111,000 out of which the European Union and the Government of Switzerland allocated EUR 99,000 and the remaining part was paid by the municipality of Sjenica. The municipality of Sjenica continued with the reconstruction of other parts of the water supply system for which it was granted RSD 9,000,000 from the Ministry of Construction and Urban Planning and 15 million RSD from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management.
